Is Eagle’s Nest accessible in winter?
Is the road to the Eagle’s Nest parking area normally plowed in winter, are the trails maintained and where can visitors check current conditions before travelling?

Yes, but winter access should be planned as a hike or snowshoe outing—not as a drive to the lookout. The Ontario Trails Council’s Eagle’s Nest listing says that once snow arrives, the road to the top is closed and snowshoes are the best winter transportation.[1]
What that means for a winter visit
- Do not assume the summit road is plowed. Treat a closed gate or winter road closure as normal seasonal access, not something to bypass.[1]
- Expect self-powered access. Hastings Trails lists snowshoeing as an activity and identifies the Hawk Watch route as an accessible trail, but it also describes the park’s operating season as spring to late fall and weather-dependent.[2]
- Do not rely on a daily maintenance report. I could not verify a current official page that publishes day-by-day plowing, grooming, ice or trail-condition reports for Eagle’s Nest. The trail listing is useful for the normal winter pattern, not a same-day guarantee.[1][2]
- Check before leaving. Review the Town’s trail information and the Stewards of Bancroft Eagles Nest Park’s current updates, then check the weather and road conditions immediately before travelling.[3][4]
- Respect closures and winter hazards. Stay out of closed areas, use traction or snowshoes appropriate to conditions, and remember that the lookout can be colder, windier and more slippery than town-level conditions.
Bottom line: Eagle’s Nest may be visitable in winter, but visitors should plan to walk or snowshoe from the lower access rather than expect to drive to the top. Confirm the current gate and trail situation before departure because seasonal operations and conditions can change.[1][2][4]
