BAPTISTE LAKE, HERSCHEL TOWNSHIP
Baptiste Lake is a large, beautiful lake located in Herschel township, Bancroft. This lake is approx 2226 hectares and part of a three lake chain with Benoir and Elephant Lakes. It offers some 36 miles of boating with a maximum depth of about 32 meters. Fish species include Lake Trout, Muskellunge, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Rock Bass, Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed and Walleye. From what we hear, the fishing is great on this lake!
Located on the lake is a marina, a few lodges and many rental cottages. It is about 15 minutes from the town of Bancroft, and an hour south of Algonquin Park.
The lake has had a few different names throughout it’s history. Kaijick Manitou, Loon Lake, Long Lake, and then finally was named Baptiste Lake after Cheif Jean Baptiste, whose family is believed to be the first original residents of the area.
